The Evolution of Modern Eyelash Extensions

Interestingly, the method of modern eyelash extension application wasn't popularized by the country where it originated, but rather by South Korea. Specifically, in the 1990s, South Korea introduced this modern eyelash extension method to the public. It became a beauty trend that later continued as part of the plastic surgery trend in the country.

Then, in 2004, modern eyelash extension techniques started to emerge in the United States, as a modified version of the South Korean method. This trend was mostly introduced by women of Eastern European descent. The technique was adapted to suit the eyes of Westerners (who typically have double eyelids and almond-shaped eyes), resulting in extensions that more closely resembled false lashes, creating a more dramatic look (volume eyelash extensions). Over the past decade, this trend has remained popular and continues to attract many enthusiasts. Below are the differences in characteristics and appearance between the Korean and American styles:

  • Korean style uses the method of attaching individual lash strands, also known as single eyelash extension or natural lash extension. American style uses a volume lash set, giving a thicker and darker effect due to the greater volume, also referred to as volume lash extension.
  • Despite the differences in application, both styles feel equally lightweight, as the lash extensions used have different diameters (for example, 0.15 millimeters for single eyelash extensions compared to 0.07 millimeters for volume eyelash extensions).
  • Both types of application are equally good, though more skill is required for creating volume lashes, which is why the American style tends to be more expensive (due to the extra training and precision needed for application).
  • Reduces the time needed for makeup application. Without realizing it, getting lashes to look perfect without extensions can take a long time, which is difficult when you're in a rush.
  • Unlike regular makeup, eyelash extensions won't smudge when exposed to water, meaning no need for retouching, which can be inconvenient when traveling without makeup tools.

The strong eyelash trend isn't limited to South Korea and the United States, but has become a global trend. In Indonesia, the eyelash extension trend in Jakarta started when Everlash opened its first branch in 2015. At the time, there were only a few players in the lash industry, such as Lashtique, Dandelion, and Tokyobelle. However, Everlash was the one that brought the American-style eyelash extension trend to Jakarta.
